What is in oats?

Oats contain beta-glucan, a soluble fibre that becomes viscous and thick in the digestive tract. Researchers are interested in it because this texture can slow down carbohydrate digestion and absorption, smoothing the rise in blood sugar.

What did human studies find?

A meta-analysis of eight randomized trials in 407 adults with type 2 diabetes found modest improvements in glucose control (fasting glucose, HbA1c, and HOMA-IR) with a typical beta-glucan dose of ~3.25g over 4.5 weeks.

However, results depend heavily on the molecular size of beta-glucan and whether oats are rolled, steel-cut, or instant.

What do berries add?

Berries contribute plant anthocyanins, fibre, and fruit sugars. A small crossover study found berry puree blunted early glucose peaks after sugar intake, but total 3-hour rise remained similar.
